Treating sciatic pain varies according to the nature of the
diagnosed reason for siatica. Since sciatica is itself a symptom and
its cure only depends on eliminating the root cause. Hence there are
many ways to treat siatica.
A) Cold packs
This form of treatment is often recommended for minor irritations to
the sciatic nerve. Cold packs placed on the effected area slow down
the blood circulation which helps to reduce inflammation, muscle
spasms and pain. In more serious conditions cold pack treatment is
used as a support treatment to other therapies.
B)Hot packs
The therapist usually alternates between hot and cold packs. The
effect that hot packs have on the body is that they help to increase
blood flow and get more blood in the area of application. They also
help to generate more oxygen and drive more nutrients in to affected
area.
C) Over-the-counter medications
Medicine like aspirin or ibuprofen can be purchased from general
medical stores anywhere. They are forms of Non-Steroidal
Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. They act as pain killers and are helpful in
reducing inflammation.
D) Prescription drugs
In certain chronic conditions or severe pain one may be prescribed
stronger medication. Some cases require muscle relaxants and anti
depressants which are only available through prescription. Basically
drug acts to reduce pain sensation.
E) Regular exercise
The best way is the all natural way. Different exercises and
therapies are constituted relative to the patient’s particular
condition. They vary from therapy sessions under medical therapists
and easy to do at home therapies.
F) Epidural steroid injections
A steroid medication is injected near the nerve roots which act to
reduce inflammation. This is also a form of pain reducer but has a
relatively longer lasting effect.
G) Surgery
The last and final solution is surgery. There are different
surgeries depending upon the diagnosed root cause for sciatica.
